Here’s How You Can Maintain Industrial Compactors

Well maintained industrial trash compactor

So you have an industrial compactor on-site where you work and you hope it lasts for years to come. What are some tips for maintaining it so it lasts for years and years?

Monthly Schedule

First off, do some monthly maintenance. Specifically, remove the rear access cover and take away any accumulated material that’s kind of stuck behind the ram. Check the ram wear bars– are they in the right position? Adjust the top and bottom ram if needed. Look for leaks around the hydraulic fittings. How are your hydraulic hoses? And damages or deterioration? Replace hoses as needed. What about the oil level in the hydraulic reservoir? It should be at 3/4 on the sight gauge. These are just some things to check monthly on your industrial compactor. Be sure and check the safety features, too.

Quarterly Safety Checks

What about quarterly? Every 3 months you’ll want to check for leaks and wear-and-tear. Are all the buttons operational? Are your anchoring bolts still tight on the guide rails and stops? How’s your pressure on the hydraulic system? It shouldn’t be over 2,000 PSI. Lubricate the hydraulic cylinder. Finally, make sure safety decals are in place and readable.

Yearly Maintenance

How about yearly maintenance tips? Every year you’ll want to clean the hydraulic filter and element on your industrial compactor. The element can be cleaned with a soft brush and some standard cleaning solvent. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this task, hire a professional company to do a yearly inspection and maintenance.

Ideally, you want your industrial compactor to work well and last a long time. If you take proactive measures to maintain it, expect the compactor to last several decades.
